Leaving the UK: how to prepare?

Updated on 1st December 2021

Fully vaccinated travellers

If you are fully vaccinated traveling to Portugal, you must provide proof of your vaccination status. The government of Portugal accepts the NHS COVID Pass, the EU COVID digital certificate or a vaccination certificate issued by a country that has joined the EU digital certificate system.

Children

Unvaccinated children under the age of 12 (ie, up to and including 11 are exempt) must also take a COVID-19 test prior to departure.

Non-vaccinated travellers

If you are non-vaccinated travelling to Portugal, you must show a negative COVID-19 pre-departure test result. The COVID-19 PCR test must be performed no later than 72 hours before departure. The government of Portugal also accepts the Rapid Antigen test, which must be done 48 hours before departure. Please note that your rapid antigen test must meet the EU common rapid antigen test list standards.

All travellers must complete an online passenger locator card before departure.

Please note that COVID-19 entry requirements in Portugal may change at short notice. It is vital you check what’s required by your airline, and are clear on the timings before you travelling.

If you are travelling to Madeira or Porto Santo

Updated on 1st December 2021

Fully vaccinated travellers must show the UK or EU COVID-19 digital vaccination. Unvaccinated travellers must have a PCR or COVID-19 antigen test within 72 hours or 48 hours, respectively, prior to departure.

There is no need for proof of vaccination for children under 12 years old.

All travellers must complete and submit a traveller questionnaire before entering Madeira or Porto Santo (except of children under the age of 12).

Upon arrival in Madeira or Porto Santo, you must present your vaccination certificate or COVID-19 negative result.

If you are unable to provide these certificates, you must take a new COVID-19 test on your arrival and quarantine in your accommodation until you receive a negative test result.

On your return to England

Updated on 7th December 2021

From 7th December, all passengers over the age of 12 must take a COVID-19 test before entering into England- regardless of vaccination status. Vaccinated travellers must book the Day 2 PCR test to be taken after arrival.

Travellers who are not fully vaccinated must book and pay for the Day 2 and Day 8 test packing in advance. Travellers should take the Day 2 test on or before your second day in England and your Day 8 test on your eight day after arrival. Your day of arrival in England is day 0.

Children under the age 5 to 17 years old can follow fully vaccinated rules. No COVID-19 test needed for children aged 4 and under.
